DP (Dependent Permit)

Dependant's Pass (DP) It is a Dependent's Permit (DP) issued by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to the spouses and unmarried children under 21 years of age of holders of a Principal Work Pass (e.g. Employment Pass, S Pass, EntrePass or PEP). The DP allows the family members to reside legally in Singapore and work or study in Singapore subject to approval.


🌟 Who can apply for DP?

Main Applicant Requirements
The sponsor of the DP must be a foreigner who holds a work permit as follows:

  • Employment Pass (EP)

  • S Pass

  • Personalised Employment Pass (PEP)

  • EntrePass

Accompanying family members

  • Legal spouse (marriage certificate required)

  • Unmarried children under 21 years of age (including legally adopted children)


🌟 Key features of DP

✅ DP is tied to the main applicant's work permit and will expire once the main applicant's permit is revoked or invalidated.
✅ DP validity usually coincides with the main applicant's pass
✅ DP holders can legally reside in Singapore
✅ If they wish to work, they need to apply for a LOC (Letter of Consent) or a work permit by their employer (the latest policy requirements depend on changes in the LOC policy).

🌟 DP application process

1️⃣ Application submitted through the MOM online system by the main applicant's employer or agent
2️⃣ Submit required documents (passport, marriage/birth certificate, etc.)
3️⃣ MOM approval (typically 3-8 weeks)
4️⃣ Obtain In-Principle Approval (IPA) and receive a physical DP card upon entry into Singapore.


🌟 Organization of work of DP holders

  • historical policy: DP holders can apply for LOC direct employment by their employer.

  • Current policy (from 2021)DP holders are required to apply for a formal work permit (e.g. EP, S Pass, WP) and fulfill the corresponding application criteria if they are employed, except for certain exemptions (e.g. DP holders who start their own business and fulfill certain conditions).


Renewal and termination of DPs

✅ DP Renewable in tandem with the main applicant's pass
✅ If the main applicant's pass is revoked, terminated or converted, the DP will also be terminated.
✅ DP holders may need to re-apply if they have been away from Singapore for more than a certain period of time or have failed to comply with immigration procedures.
